AKA Alföld Koncessziós Autópálya Ltd. and the M5 Motorway Operator Company, A-WAY Ltd. have prepared their maintenance fleet for winter operation, which is ready to handle winter conditions with a regular road control service starting from 10^th November, 2022. At three operation and maintenance centres – located near Újhartyán, Kiskunfélegyháza and Balástya – the vehicles and their adapters handling the winter maintenance works were prepared and passed the inspections.

AKA Alföld Koncessziós Autópálya Ltd. and the M5 Motorway Operating Company, A-WAY Ltd., carry out tasks instructed for winter operation in accordance with their legal obligations. The motorway and the maintenance fleet are all prepared for the winter season. Training of the workforce has concluded in accordance with the operating regulations.  An on-call service will be provided starting from 10^th November, 2022, up until 15^th March, 2023. Depending on weather conditions, the duration of this service can be subject of change.

The winter maintenance of the 156.6-kilometre-long motorway section is managed by three operation and maintenance centres with the help of vehicles specifically adjusted to the winter operation period. De-icing and snow removal on the motorway will be carried out by 12 dual-purpose vehicles. In addition, 7 multifunctional Unimogs capable of disseminating salt and ploughing, 3 for loading and if necessary, 5 additional rented vehicles can help with the winter operation of the motorway.

The maintenance centres are prepared for the de-icing the road surfaces of the motorway. For this purpose, 7040 tons of sodium chloride and 18 tons of calcium chloride is available in the salt storages. At each operation and maintenance centre, the service is managed by a chief supervisor in 12-hour shifts. The drivers also work in 12-hour shifts, while the dispatcher and road patrol service ensures smooth traffic conditions 24 hours a day.

In order to ensure accident-free and continuous traffic flow, the Operator surveys the condition of the motorway with raised attention on the entire road network. During the day road conditions are monitored regularly every two hours, and every four hours between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.

In order to increase traffic safety, a CCTV camera system is operating, that enables continuous traffic monitoring at interchanges and rest areas as well. Meteorological stations placed along the motorway relay the latest weather data every five minutes. The Operating Company monitors the satellite imagery combined with cloud-based data of the National Meteorological Service, which is updated every 15 minutes relating to the highway sections belonging to each operation and maintenance centre. In addition, travelers, who have experienced a mechanical breakdown can request help using emergency telephones which are located every two kilometers.

Accident-free traffic therefore depends on the responsibility of the drivers as well as the condition of their vehicles. In order to ensure a safe and smooth winter travel, we kindly ask everyone to watch out for each other on the roads and prepare their car for the winter. In order to drive safely travelers may need to reduce their usual travel speed they have been accustomed to during the summer weather conditions.

Extreme weather conditions can further complicate the work the maintenance fleet carries out during winter. We ask motorists to excercise increased patience and caution.

Road surface repair works will be carried out on the M5 Motorway in the proximity of Örkény between 10^th September and 9^th October 2022 in the direction of Szeged between chainage 53 and 60. AKA Ltd. kindly asks road users to exercise patience due to the traffic restrictions caused by the repairs.

The repairs will expectedly start on 10^th September 2022 on the aforementioned section. During the road surface repair works on the M5 Motorway the traffic in the direction of Szeged will be temporarily diverted into the fast lane with closing the slow lane and the emergency lane between chainage 53 and 60 km. The repair works will also affect traffic in the direction of Budapest. After the traffic diversion takes effect, travelers heading in the direction of Szeged can temporarily also use the fast lane of the opposite side. During the road surface repairs, the traffic in the direction of Budapest will be temporarily diverted into the slow lane and the emergency lane. Entering and leaving the Örkény rest area will remain available during the entire duration of the temporary diversion. The repair works will not affect any interchanges. The road surface repair works are expected to be completed by 9^th October 2022. Speed limits of 60 km/h and 80 km/h are to be expected within the aforementioned section.

AKA Ltd. kindly asks road users to exercise patience due to the traffic restrictions caused by the repairs.

The repairs will expectedly start on 30^th August 2022 on the aforementioned section. During the road surface repair works on the M5 Motorway the traffic in the direction of Szeged will be partially diverted into the slow lane and entirely diverted into the emergency lane with closing the fast lane between chainage 121 and 126 km. Entering and leaving the Petőfiszállás rest area will remain available during the entire duration of the temporary diversion. The repair works will not affect any interchanges. The road surface repair works are expected to be completed by 9^th September 2022. Speed limits of 60 km/h and 80 km/h are to be expected within the aforementioned section. The repair works will not affect traffic in the direction of Budapest.

The traffic speed on the M5 Motorway may decrease from time to time due to scheduled maintenance and operation works. In overloaded traffic lanes, the risk of accidents and periodic traffic jams can also increase, so AKA Ltd. compiled several useful pieces of travel advice for travelers.

• Due to the works and the associated traffic restrictions, we ask vehicle drivers on the M5 Motorway to drive with additional caution and patience, in accordance with the suggested speed limits and in consideration of the road conditions.
• In order to ensure safe traffic conditions, it is crucial that drivers inspect that their vehicles are up to technical safety standards, in addition drivers should pay particular attention to maintain a sufficient following distance in heavy traffic.
• It is important that motorists choose the speed of their vehicles according to the road and visibility conditions.
• Drive carefully, and if you experience fatigue, take a break – preferably once every 2 hours – at one of the designated rest areas.
• In addition to complying with all of these suggestions, please fasten your seat belts when you head out!

Upcoming road surface repair works can be expected in the proximity of Csengele on the M5 Motorway in the direction of Budapest. The road surface repair works will expectedly start on July 29^th, 2022 and end on August 10^th, 2022 on the aforementioned section.

Road surface repair works will be carried out on M5 Motorway in the proximity of Kiskunfélegyháza between 17^th and 24^th June 2022 in the direction of Budapest between chainage 104 and 110. AKA Ltd. kindly asks road users to exercise patience due to the traffic restrictions caused by the repairs.

The repairs will expectedly start on 17^th June 2022 on the aforementioned section. During the road surface repair works on M5 Motorway the traffic in the direction of Budapest will be diverted from the fast lane into the slow lane with closing the fast and emergency lanes between chainage 104 and 110 km. The temporary diversion section will affect the Kiskunfélegyháza-North interchange, however, travelers will be able to enter and leave the M5 Motorway during the traffic diversion. The repair works will not affect any rest areas. The road surface repair works are expected to be completed by June 24^th 2022. Speed limits of 60 km/h and 80 km/h are to be expected within the aforementioned zone. The repair works will not affect traffic in the direction of Szeged.

Road surface repair works will be carried out on M5 motorway in the proximity of Kecskemét between 11^th May and 13^th June 2022 in the direction of Szeged between chainage 73 and 84. The Lajosmizse weight station will be closed between 14^th and 24^th May 2022.

The repairs will expectedly start on 11^th May 2022 on M5 Motorway between chainage 71 and 78. From the direction of Szeged, one traffic lane will be diverted into the direction of Budapest, ensuring the two traffic lanes for the travelers travelling towards both directions. Periodically there will be one traffic lane available for the travelers in both directions during the installation and disassembly of the traffic diversions. The traffic diversion continues in second phase of the works between chainage 74 and 84 between 21^st May and 13^th June 2022 with still providing the two lane traffic capacity.

During the repair works, Hetény rest area, Kecskemét north interchange and Kecskemét north bypass will be available for travelers. The weigh station located at chainage 71 of M5 Motorway in the direction of Budapest will be closed between 14^th and 24^th May 2022.

Speed limits of 60 and 80 km/h are to be expected within the aforementioned section, which we kindly ask to comply with.

AKA Alföld Koncessziós Autópálya Ltd. and the M5 Motorway Operator Company, A-WAY Ltd. has resumed their operation and maintenance tasks in accordance with their legal obligations following the end of the winter season.

During the transition towards the spring season, AKA Ltd. and the M5 Motorway Operator Company, A-WAY Ltd. will carry out washing and cleaning works, maintenance procedures on the vegetation, as well as cleaning the emergency lanes and the curbsides of the roads as part of their operation tasks. Adapters suitable for the spring work have also been prepared and installed.

In addition to the operational works, this year’s renovation and pavement renovation works are currently also under planning. The pavement renovation works are expected to start in late spring, the exact location and time of which will be provided by AKA Ltd. on their website www.aka.hu as well as Útinform on their website www.utinform.hu.
