AKA Alföld Koncessziós Autópálya Ltd. and the M5 Motorway Operating Company, A-WAY Ltd. ensures the safety and smoothness of winter traffic with rigorous preparations. From 10th November, 2024, their maintenance fleet is fully ready to handle winter weather conditions, supported by regular road patrols and trained professionals. At three operation and maintenance centres – located near Újhartyán, Kiskunfélegyháza and Balástya – the vehicles and their adapters handling the winter maintenance works were prepared and passed the inspections.

AKA Alföld Koncessziós Autópálya Ltd. and the M5 Motorway Operating Company, A-WAY Ltd., carry out tasks instructed for winter operation in accordance with their legal obligations. The motorway and the maintenance fleet are all prepared to run seamlessly during the winter season. Training of the workforce has concluded in accordance with the operating regulations. An on-call service will be provided starting from 10th November up until 15th March. Depending on weather conditions, the duration of this service can be subject of change.

The winter maintenance of the 156,5-kilometre-long motorway section is managed by three operation and maintenance centres with the help of vehicles specifically adjusted to the winter operation period. De-icing and snow removal will be carried out by 12 dual-purpose vehicles. In addition, 7 multifunctional Unimogs capable of disseminating salt and ploughing, 3 for loading and if necessary, 4 additional rented vehicles can help with the winter operation of the motorway.

For the salting of the roads, the salt storage facilities of the maintenance centres provide 6234,47 tons of sodium chloride and 18 tons of calcium chloride. At each operation and maintenance centre, the service is managed in 12-hour shifts. The drivers also work in 12-hour shifts, while the dispatcher and road patrol service ensures smooth traffic conditions 24 hours a day.

In order to ensure accident-free and continuous traffic flow, the Operator regularly monitors road conditions every two hours during the day, and every four hours during the night. In order to increase traffic safety, a CCTV camera system continuously monitors traffic at interchanges and rest areas as well. Meteorological stations placed along the motorway relay the latest weather data every five minutes, which is complemented by satellite imagery of the National Meteorological Service updated every 15 minutes, thus the operation of each section is always based on the most up-to-date information.

In order to drive safely travelers may need to reduce their usual travel speed they have been accustomed to during the summer weather conditions.
Extreme weather conditions can further complicate the work the maintenance fleet carries out during winter. We ask motorists to exercise increased patience and caution.

Accident-free traffic does not solely depend on operators, it includes the collective effort of drivers as well as the condition of their vehicles. Especially during the winter, it is essential that drivers pay more attention to each other and prepare their vehicles for the winter. It is important that they adjust their usual travel speed to the weather conditions, as extreme winter weather can also be challenging for the maintenance fleet. Road surface repair works will be carried out on the M5 Motorway in the proximity of Örkény between 16th October and 6th November 2024 in the direction of Szeged between chainage 52 and 54. During the road surface repair works, traffic will be diverted at the technical crossings between chainage 49 and 57. AKA Ltd. kindly asks road users to exercise patience due to the traffic restrictions caused by the repairs.

During the road surface repair works on the M5 Motorway the traffic in the direction of Szeged between chainage 49 and 57 will be temporarily diverted into the fast lane and into the fast lane of the opposite side. The traffic in the direction of Szeged between chainage 55 and 57 will be diverted partially into the slow lane and the emergency lane, and later with the progression of the repair works travelers can use the fast lane. During the traffic restriction, travelers in the direction of Szeged can leave the motorway at the Örkény interchange in case if they drive in the diversion of Szeged. During the works entering and leaving the interchange will be possible. The restrictions will also affect the motorway in the direction of Budapest, where the traffic will be temporarily diverted into the slow lane and the emergency lane.

Speed limits of 60 and 80 km/h are to be expected within the aforementioned section.

On the M5 Motorway the Kecskemét north interchange at chainage 74 will expectedly be closed from 10th October 2024 until autumn 2026 due to construction works carried out at the interchange of the M5 Motorway and the M44 Expressway. On the motorway in the direction of Budapest the offramp will be closed from 10th October 2024. Entering the motorway at this interchange towards Budapest will be possible from the direction of Kecskemét. On the motorway in the direction of Szeged the off- and onramp will be closed from 14th October 2024. During this period, traffic will be diverted between chainage 72 and 76. AKA Ltd. kindly asks road users to exercise patience due to the traffic restrictions caused by the repairs.

From 10th October 2024 on the M5 Motorway in the direction of Budapest the offramp of the Kecskemét north interchange at chainage 74 will expectedly be closed, the onramp from the direction of Kecskemét will remain accessible for travelers. During this period, traffic on both sides of the motorway will be diverted between chainage 72 and 76. The emergency lanes will be closed, thus traffic will be able to move on narrower tracks on the slow and the fast lanes with a speed limit.

From 14th October 2024 on the motorway in the direction of Szeged the off- and onramp of the Kecskemét north interchange will be closed. Leaving and entering the M5 Motorway will be possible at the Lajosmizse interchange at chainage 68 or the Kecskemét north bypass interchange at chainage 81. At the interchange, main road No. passing over the motorway will remain accessible with temporary traffic restrictions. Travelers on main road No. 5 from Lajosmizse to Kecskemét will not be able to turn onto the onramp of the motorway in the direction of Budapest.

A speed limit of 60 km/h is to be expected within the aforementioned section. The repair works are expected to be completed by autumn 2026

• The Lajosmizse interchange and rest area will be fully closed, hence leaving and entering the motorway will not be possible.

The repairs will expectedly start on 20th September 2024 on the aforementioned section. On the M5 Motorway in the direction of the border crossing the onramp of the Szeged north interchange at chainage 159 will be closed. Access to the border crossing for traffic entering at the Szeged north interchange will be possible via a detour route turning around at the Balástya interchange at chainage 147. The repair works are expected to be completed by 15th October 2024. A speed limit of 100 km/h is to be expected within the aforementioned section.
