AKA Alföld Koncessziós Autópálya Zrt. and the M5 Motorway Operating Company, A-WAY Zrt., completed the tasks prescribed for winter operation in accordance with their legal obligations. The motorway, associated facilities, and the maintenance fleet have also been prepared. In accordance with the operating regulations, the employees were trained and the on-call service was organized, which will start on November 10, 2020, and is expected to last until March 15, 2021. Depending on the weather, it is possible to start the service earlier or maintain it further. De-icing and snowploughing materials have been procured.

Winter maintenance of the 156.6-kilometre-long motorway section is performed by three operation and maintenance centres with the help of vehicles specially prepared for the winter operation period. Slippery discharge and snow removal will be done by nine dual-purpose vehicles of the company’s own property on the motorway. In addition, six multifunctional Unimogs eligible for salting and ploughing, three for loading and if necessary, eight machines can be hired to help with the winter operation of the motorway.

4,513 tons of sodium chloride and 20.12 tons of calcium chloride are available in the salt storages of the maintenance centers for the slippery discharge of the motorway pavement. In each operation and maintenance center the service is managed by 1-1 chief supervisor in 12-hour shifts, drivers also work in 12-hour shifts, while the dispatcher and road patrol service ensure accident-free traffic 24 hours a day.

In order to ensure accident-free and continuous traffic, the Operator monitors the condition of the motorway with increased attention on the entire road network. Road conditions are monitored regularly every two hours in the daytime, and in every four hours between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.

In order to increase traffic safety, a CCTV camera system is operating, that enables continuous traffic monitoring at interchanges and rest areas as well. Meteorological stations along the motorway forward the latest weather data in every five minutes and cloud-based data combined with satellite records are also provided by the Hungarian Meteorological Service, updated every 15 minutes. In addition, emergency telephone boxes are also available every two kilometres for the distressed travellers to ask for help.

Safe and smooth traffic depends on the attitude of drivers and the condition of vehicles too. Cars need to be checked technically and equipped for winter.

Before leaving for longer journeys we should check the latest road information provided by Utinform and the interactive map of AKA Zrt., and while travelling, make sure to keep the following distance and traffic rules!

We wish you accident-free and safe traffic!
