In case of technical problem please leave your car on the emergency lane, switch on your emergency warning light, get on your safety vest, leave your car and move behind the guard rail.
One of the basic demands of the technical security is the unobjectionable condition of the tyres. Using adequately chosen winter tyres, the stopping distance is considerably shortened in case of emergency braking; it ensures uniform passage among severe conditions by the adequate leading away of the rainwater and by the safer keeping of the road.
The winter tyres operate adequately below 7 degrees centigrade, namely it adapts well to the conditions of the road. It is advisable to mount all the four wheels of the vehicle with tyres of winter pattern. It is important to choose the safe speed of passage by winter tyres too!
Made the condition of the shock absorbers checked by instrumental measurement, because it influences the road-holding capacity of the car, the stability and the length of the braking distance at a considerable degree. Also the braking effect must be checked by instrumental measurement. It is important to check the thickness of brake linings, the wire of the handbrake, the protection of the parts of the undercarriage, the bellows of the shaft axles and the gum caps protecting the globe heads.
In winter we should use also the lights of the vehicle more. It is important to adjust the headlights well and its light intensity should be also appropriate; we must use them in a proper way, do not blind and disturb others.
The fog-lights should be switched on only if there's fog! Applying the principle 'to see, to b seen and to adapt' in practice can considerably improve the safety of traffic. The visibility through the windscreen can be ensured by the adequately operating demister system, by the well-operating rear-window heating and by the good quality windscreen-wiper blades. In winter we should fill up the windscreen washer tank by antifreeze windscreen washing liquid. The ice solvent, sleet scraper, gloves and shovel should be kept in readiness. In winters the frequent misting up of the windscreen and the windows can be liquidated by the opening of the windows, by adequate heating and by the usage of dry clothes.
Clean the globes in a regular way. The bad adjustment of the headlights, and the tinted headlight glass can still spoil the visibility by night. Among adverse weather conditions we should begin to indicate our intention earlier and for a longer period of time, but do not be deceptive.
It is worth practising for the beginner drivers and for those – who learnt driving in spring or summer months – a bit already at the time of appearance of the first frost and the first snow. You can, however, obtain experience on courses of driving practice with the help of skilled trainers among more secure circumstances. In dense fog it is practical to go in convoy, naturally, keeping the necessary safety gap.
The mist, the fog and the looming sunshine strongly spoils the ability for the estimation of distance: we can see the objects farther than it is in the reality. This mistake can be critical especially in case of overtaking! In winter traffic we must count on that also our companions of traffic (including the pedestrians and cyclists) will be surprised by the changed surface of the road. The sudden movements, the surprising situations of traffic frequently cause accidents during this period. The winter conditions of the road demand much more cautious driving style! We should go a bit slower, keeping a bit greater safety gap and fastening the seat-belts.
